ABOUT ECHO

Meet The Founder, Josephine

I hit a patch, which at the time felt like darkness, loss, confusion and the spark of joy had just gone.

I had practiced yoga and meditation off and on with my family and mother, and it was dear friend who reminded me of the practice; 'Here, I have a spare mat, come along to class and you get the first session free'. I remember not having a clue what I was doing, wobbling, struggling to find my breath, glancing around to make sure I was doing it right. I had been a dancer all my life, but this was different. As you've probably read a hundred times over, or maybe experienced it for yourself. I sat up after shavasana and it was as if a weight had been lifted, a heavy heart was a little lighter, and I felt connected to myself and life again after a month or so of stepping on to the mat. It became a way for me to move, free from judgement, it was a way of taking care of my mental health. And that was the start, over 15 years ago.

I continue to work as a singer, in theatres and on cruise ships. I started teaching my fellow singers and dancers, just some basics, but it helped. On especially long hard days, there was the gift of being able to guide others through movement, presence and peace. My Director, in an offhand way, said 'I think you should teach that properly, why don't you train', and there it was, my heart filled, excitement welled up and as much as it's a cliche, I booked my trip to India.

I trained in India, along the banks of the Ganga, in Rishikesh. Studying Hatha yoga, Vinyasa flow, Restorative, Meditation, Pranayama, Philosophy, Ayurveda and Anatomy. It was a transformational time, not only physically but mentally challenging, old parts of myself got in the way, and eventually fell away to reveal more truth and insight as we were guided through the philosophy and more traditional aspects of the practice. I still find tears well up, when I think of practicing in the basic studio, that looked out onto the river, sunrises and sunsets bounced off the walls of the river banks and into the room. I learned a lot more about meditation, but I was still at the beginning of this part of the practice, but it has developed into one of the most fundamental aspects of my journey as a student and teacher.

I returned after my performing career to Brighton, and embarked on my new career. This was not free from challenges, who knew, it appeared that 1 in every 5 people in Brighton appeared to teach yoga. I struggled to find my voice, my authentic self, but eventually taught for a few wonderful studios and I found out who I really was as a teacher. I added onto my teaching with additional training in Yin, Nidra, and pregnancy yoga.

My timing was slightly off, but I opened a yoga studio in 2019, blissfully unaware that the global pandemic was around the corner. Covid had other ideas in mind for me and my little dream. I took everything online, offering my new clients classes, support, recordings as we all navigated one of the hardest periods of recent years. I was forced to shut up shop, in 2021, when things got too hard.

I endured some huge loss in 2019, not just with my studio but in my personal life. Facing grief, like I'd never known, soundbaths became more of a regular practice for me. Having attended my first in 2018, I was now completely obsessed. When I entered into that space of meditation with sound, It felt like the only thing that brought me total support, relief and healing when carrying such loss and sadness. So I ventured into the world of sound healing. starting with small Tibetan bowls, then a crystal bowl set.

I embarked on a pop-up business, finding event spaces, running retreats, soundbaths, classes and more. This was the start of what is now Echo. I now integrate my musical knowledge, healing ability and teaching to provide bespoke, high-end and transformational courses, events, retreats, 1-2-1 healing, recordings and more.

Mindfulness, and radical compassion are a central point of my teachings. As well as the traditional 8 limbs of yoga, TCM, cyclical living, seasonal learning and sound.

I recently had my first one-to-one sound bath with Josephine. She is truly an experienced practitioner who knew intuitively what I needed. I left the session feeling fully restored and rested. I am looking forward to many more sessions in the future. The perfect pick me up for everyone. So glad I have found Josephine.

"

I write to share with you the belief that Josephine Warren is one of the best yoga teachers, Josephine’s classes are special because she is a real teacher (as opposed an instructor).  Not only is she notably clear in the physical details she outlines and demonstrates (in ways that speak to people’s different levels of yoga experience) but she also draws attention to yoga’s inner awareness, opening up something of yoga’s deeper, spiritual sensitivities. This is special.
