Tibetan singing bowls arranged for a sound bath session
Josephine playing the Tibetan Bowls

The first time I attended a soundbath is was almost by mistake, I signed up to a Yin and sound experience over 8 years ago at a beautiful studio in Brighton.

I tucked myself into Shavsana and what happened blew my tiny musical mind.

Vrystal vibrations, swelled, ebbed and flowed, filling my busy mind with peace, clarity and calm. For a moment or two there was nothing, just space, presence and wonder.

What had just happened? The crystal Sining bowls had just happened, that's what and the love affair started.

SO, WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SOUNDBATH?

You don't need any special clothing or equipment for a soundbath, but you should wear comfortable clothes. At our new studio everything is provided, mattress, blankets, pillow, eye pillow, or other props that will make you comfortable.

"A Soundbath seeks to balance our physical, emotional, and mental systems, restoring a sense of harmony,"

  • Arriving early, so you have time to settle.

  • Setting up your space, getting comfy, having some water at hand, making sure your comfy and warm.

  • Josephine will guide you through a short meditation to ease you into the space, during a soundbath a variety of instruments are played in a specific order to ease you into a meditative state.

  • These might include metal hammered Tibetan bowls, chimes, crystal bowls, gongs, voice and drum.

  • During the sound journey, you'll be held safely and you will let your body rest. You might experience colours, visions, truths, emotions or sleep.

  • At the end your gently brought back into the space, using with a minute or two of silence to recalibrate.

  • We share tea, water, pause and reflect before you drift off home.

  • We often advise after a session to drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine and alcohol. It's best to put your phone away, and avoid social media.

Josephine draws on her musical background, her years of yoga teaching and healing abilities to guide you through a soundscape like no other.

All you have to do is lie back, take a deep breath, and let go.

SO, WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING? WHAT ARE THE SOUNDS?

In general, a sound bath is a meditative experience where those in attendance are “bathed” in sound waves.

These waves are produced by various sources, including healing instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, percussion, chimes, rattles, tuning forks, and even the human voice itself.

The music doesn’t have a catchy melody or rhythm like you’d experience at a rock concert or symphony but, instead, is a carefully selected wash of instruments and voice with notable resonance and overtones.

Working with a variety of instruments we are entraining brainwaves, and encouraging the body to 'let go'.

By providing a deeply healing experience, we can reset the nervous system, entrain brainwaves to a more meditative state(theta) and heal on a cellular level by relieving pain and held tension.

HOW DID WE ARRIVE HERE? SOUND-BATHING?

Ancient cultures, from Egypt to Tibetan employed voice and sound instruments to impact people’s bodies and minds in a healing fashion. For thousands of years, we have called on healers, witches, tribe leaders, and people of the world for healing. Sound healing worthing may seem like a new practice, but in fact, it is an ancient art form, used by many from the Egyptians to the Eskimos. The science of sound has only just started to be researched and invested in, we are at the tip of the iceberg.

Sound has long been associated with alleviating emotional, physical, and mental discord.

THE DRONE LIKE SOUND OF DEEP REST

The drone like sounds generated by the didgeridoos of the indigenous people of Australia for instance have been used as a healing method for more than 40,000 years ago. In addition, aboriginal tribes knew that using their didgeridoos can facilitate the equivalent of what we understand now as flow states, where the brain is in optimal condition to perform and function.  alpha and theta states are the most ideal frequencies for triggering a flow state. Typically, theta brainwaves (7Hz to 8Hz), are present during light sleep and deep meditation. Meanwhile, alpha waves (7.5-14Hz)are associated with relaxation, daydreaming, and light meditation

SOUND AND HEALING

People have been using sound to promote healing for thousands of years. For example, ancient Greek physicians used musical instruments as therapy believing that the instruments' vibrations could aid in digestion, treat mental disturbance, and induce sleep. Meanwhile, ancient Egyptians thought musical incantations healed the sick. We have just taken this ancient form of music medicine and made it accessible.

EXPANDING YOUR AWARENESS AND RELATIONSHIP TO SELF

  • The general intention of a sound bath is to create a state of harmony in the listener by using sound to clear discordance from the participants' energy fields.

  • In addition to helping the body relax, sound baths can potentially foster physical healing. Similar to the experience of acupuncture.

  • Energy can be blocked somewhere that the practitioner helps unlock. Josephine uses frequency and vibration.

  • While it may sound “too good to be true,” corroborating data exists. Numerous studies have pointed to the therapeutic effects of music and sound therapy.

  • Sound therapy is deeply rooted in science and based on the principles of quantum physics and sacred geometry. There are hundreds of clinical trials and peer-reviewed white paper studies on the healing properties of sound. Fir example, Western medicine uses sound waves on a daily basis in the form of ultrasound technology, which can be used to break up kidney stones among other things.”
