We Whisper Quietly; 'Enough' | New Moon In Cancer

When life is full, I often find it hard to draw on inspiration. Nature and a precious pause allows time for musing, her teachings pooling and solidifying with each step, pause, swim or glance at the expansive sky.

Internally, the seed of self-doubt has been brewing, fuelled by work, job-life, bill-paying, budget checking. In 'the reeds' of busy-ness, spirit seems illusive, far away and greatly missed.

In a (ever-growing) wellness industry, these parts are often forgotten about. That we are human, doing our best in a world that is growing more challenging, divisive, harsh and heart-breaking.

To grow traction, we must voice option. It is everywhere, from our screens, neighbours, media and in the air. Are you doing it right? Are you doing it wrong? Are you good enough, clean enough, pure enough, grounded enough, spiritual enough...

The overall feeling my clients have been bringing to me, isn't such a wishwashy spirutal-teaching. But one of push back, strong words of 'enough'. The summer can do this to us. I do not bemoan the sun, the clear skies, the warm evenings. But the heat of summer causes internal fire to rise, it is expansive, productive, dynamic, and busy. And for some, like me also, we whisper quietly on our breath 'I can't wait for Autumn'...

shocking I know. but the relentless nature of this season can catch some of us off guard. We must set boundaries for quiet times, moments of solitude.

I have marvelled at the noise summer brings here in Sussex. My garden and home are fairly quiet, but human life spills out into the gardens, trampoline parties, football matches with the TV directed into the open garden. I applaud the celebration that we have with heat and summer, but my tired ears long for quiet. So, I took to the sea...

I managed to sync up with the tide, a warm morning and a clear beach. I swam in still, fluid, glass-like ripples at 7am, this felt like magic. I glanced back to the shoreline: blue, calm, ribbon-like, rhythmical. Sandwiched above, shingles, rough, texture, earthy hues of yellows and brown. The surprising rise of the sand dune, with the playful tufts of grass resting on bright light sand, held gentle by the clear morning sky. And I thought, 'nothing is just one thing'. There is no 'one opinion, thought, feeling, experience'. There is always a dynamic contrast, being held at the same time.

The more I practice, the more the calling to simplify and come back home to my original teachings, mindfulness, self-compassion, self-knowledge, and wisdom. But also, I feel this deep pull within of reminding my community and myself, that yoga and meditation(plus sound healing) is also about connection; late state capitalism has a way of making us hyper self-focused. And sometimes that's ok, we help ourselves, so we can heal the planet, love each other and keep forging ahead against hate, fear and injustice. But what about kindness, what about each other, what about the future of this planet and what we are leaving behind?

Writing this stirred emotion in me. I've hardly had time to catch my breath, journal, write, find my poetry, practice my singing. But sometimes in life, we have to work hard, we are dropped down into our foundations, roots, the primal part of ourselves that is surviving. I do sometimes wonder why I made such choices, pushed myself so hard to achieve my dream, things are still evolving and aren't yet finished, but we are getting there. Autumn holds hope for me, time to exhale and find balance again.

New Moon In Cancer.

This Sunday we come together in the studio for the FIRST IN-PERSON New Moon Crystal Soundbath with Yoga Nidra. A beautiful, bright practice to help you rest while the Moon does the same. The darkness of the night sky allows reflection, an exhale and a moment to take stock.

Cancer, ruled by the Moon herself, makes this New Moon especially potent. This is a homecoming, guide space for intuition and emotions to be felt with kindness and space.

This new moon, we get the chance to reflect on:

Our home & our family: chosen or blood-related

Roots: Do we feel grounded, safe, financially secure? We can look at our lineage, our story, those who created us and led us here.

Emotional foundation: Do you feel safe enough to express your emotions, how can you create this, what emotions are bubbling away but are perhaps being blocked, this can be grief, anger, joy and love, among many others.

4th House corresponds to the heart chakra region: chest, lungs, and ribcage—where we feel love, peace, safety to express our hearts calling. The new moon would like you to take a few deep breaths, and let a softening arrive in the heart.

The Heart (Xin) houses the Shen, which is governed by the Vermilion Bird, she takes flight through your eyes when you connect with others, but she wants to return to safety, especially when you meditate or sleep, resting on her perch or in her nest.

In Daoist the indwelling spirit of the heart is often described as a lively and unpredictable creature. Because Fire is by nature rising and active, the Heart Spirit is easily agitated by stress, trauma, or overstimulation. In spiritual cultivation, this is colloquially referred to as the bird "flying away," which results in racing thoughts, insomnia, or anxiety.

Cultivating moments to be with your heart, and also with those you love, tell them you love them, hug them, also give permission to yourself to receive love and kindness. Think of nurturing and attuning to what makes you feel safe and loved.

Journaling prompts.

  • Home and sanctuary: Creating or improving your living space. What do I want to create or heal in my home life?

  • Family intentions: Healing, connecting, or setting boundaries. What family patterns am I ready to transform?

  • Emotional security: What makes you feel safe and held?

  • Nurturing self: How will you mother yourself? How can I better nurture myself this month?

  • Roots and heritage: Connecting with ancestry.
